A few interesting articles here, shared with me by a fellow who’s been following my KILLING THE GRIZZLY column.
The first is a breakdown of the many apocalyptic events going on with the book publishig industry of late. If you haven’t been paying attention to the news, this will likely come as a shock. Well, not a SHOCK, but…shocking how quickly things go down when they finally do. We’re talking massive-scale bankruptcy and dissolution(s).
Here’s the skinny: READ IT AND WEEP by Jason Bloog
And then comes this second article written by the guy who wrote the 2003, rather prescient novel: The Last Days of Publishing. The writings been on the wall for years, so why did no one in the book world so much as flinch until now, when it’s too late? Tom lays out the myths, beliefs, and (faultily attributed) historical precedent that allowed publishers to become what they have, and fail on every level imaginable, and spectacularly so. Really interesting stuff.
